Hi Everyone,

I've just joined Our Family and still trying to rind my way around.
I am trying to find any data on John McCracken, [a master baker] born Colmonell, Ayrshire about 1835-1840.father John, mother Janet McCreadie.
So far all I have is a sore heid from banging it against the proverbial brick wall.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Cheers
Brenda

I'm in Australia, and often come across information relevant for other families. Goulburn (NSW) is one of the oldest cities.

Looking for McNaughtans (aka MacNaughton,MacNaughton, McNaughton depending on who was writing in the census and the immigration papers). I know I have relatives in Australia and South Africa

Does everyone know about GenealogyWise? It's a social network quite similar to this one but specifically designed for genealogists. I run the 'Scotland and Scottish Ancestry' group which currently has over 400 members and an active discussion forum. Hope to see you all there!

That sounds great Kristy. I don't actually have much research to do on the Northern Ireland side, just dates really, but it's been annoying not to be able to look them up.

Indexes to Irish BMDs (including Northern Ireland pre-1922) are being put online on the FamilySearch Record Pilot at http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#p=collectionDetails;t=searchable;c=1408347 If you are able to identify your ancestor's birth in Scottish records then tracing family who stayed in Scotland is quite straightforward (although sometimes a little time-consuming) and I quite often do this type of research. Let me know if I can help!

Thank you Rosemary I have tried Genesreunited and Ancestry.com but to no avail but I will take your advice and keep trying other such sites, John was my grandfather and most of my family are dead including my mum and dad, my older brother filled me in with some facts but he does not know about any relatives left in Scotland, so it's up to me but I will keep trying thanks anyway for the advice,
God Bless, Gerry.

Hi Gerry
Northern Ireland can be a bit difficult as their BMD records aren't on-line (as yet). Seems you have to check them personally at the Registry in Belfast. Once again, I'd suggest joining as many genealogy sites as possible and posting notes in their forums. Have you tried Genesreunited and Ancestry.com? I've had a lot of luck with both, although Genesreunited is not at expensive at Ancestry.com. Worth a ook anyway. Good luck. I'll be interested to hear how you go as I have family in Belfast also.

I made another geneaology contact today - through another site. We have several surnames in common - Cobbans, Lawries, Urquharts, Yules amongst them but strangely enough, none that match up! I'm sure we'll both keep looking though. I'm quite surprised as I didn't think that Cobban was a particularly common name.
